What is a Server Only installation?

A Server Only installation allows the Systems Administrator to place the Kar2ouche application on a Windows-based server that is attached to the network instead of installing Kar2ouche on each networked workstation locally.  Each networked workstation will only require a desktop shortcut to the Kar2ouche executable to run Kar2ouche.

Before you begin please check the version of Kar2ouche software you have and follow the appropriate steps to perform your Server Only installation.

If you have a mixture of Kar2ouche version 3.0 and 3.5 please follow the instructions for version 3.0.  However, if you don’t have Kar2ouche Composer please contact our support team via the Contact link at the top of this webpage for further advice.

How do I know what version I have?

Version 3.0: will state 'for use with Kar2ouche Composer' on CD1

Version 3.5: will state the version inumber on CD1

If you are unsure please contact our support team via the Contact link at the top of this webpage for further advice.

The following step-by-step instructions assume that the Systems Administrator has administrative access to the server that will host the Kar2ouche application and is familiar in administering network directories.

The step-by-step process for Kar2ouche version 3.0 software

Step1.  At the Server console, create a new folder called Kar2ouche (normally in a location on the server drive that contains application software).  The user permissions on this folder will need to be 'Read' and 'Execute' for those using the Kar2ouche application.

Step 2.  Insert CD1 of Kar2ouche Composer into a CD drive accessible to the server and copy the entire contents of CD1 into the new Kar2ouche folder (if the Autorun program launches the Kar2ouche install box please click Cancel).

Now proceed to Step 3.

The step-by-step process for Kar2ouche version 3.5 software

Step 1.  At the Server console, create a new folder called Kar2ouche (normally in a location on the server drive that contains application software).  The user permissions on this folder will need to be 'Read' and 'Execute' for those using the Kar2ouche application.

Step 2.  Choose one of your Kar2ouche version 3.5 content titles and insert CD1 into a CD drive accessible to the server.  Copy the entire contents of CD1 into the new Kar2ouche folder (if the Autorun program launches the Kar2ouche install box please click Cancel).

Continue to Step 3 for all versions

Step 3.  View the contents of the Kar2ouche folder on the server.   There are now two new folders called Content Modules and My Storyboards, as shown here:

Figure A

Remove the CD1 from the CD drive and keep in a safe place.

Step 4.  If you have any further Kar2ouche content titles to install then please complete this step, otherwise skip this step and move straight onto to step 6.

Insert CD1 of the Kar2ouche content title into a CD drive accessible to the server (if the Autorun program launches the Kar2ouche install box please click Cancel).

View the contents of the CD and expand the Content Modules folder.  You will find a folder named after the content title name.   Copy this folder into the new Content Modules folder on the server, as shown below in the example of Kar2ouche Macbeth.

View the contents of the CD and expand the My Storyboards folder.  You will find a folder named after the content title name.   Copy this folder into the new My Storyboards folder on the server.

Remove the Content Title CD and keep in a safe place.
Repeat this step for each Content Title you need to install.

Step 5.  View the contents of the Kar2ouche folder on the server.  It should look very similar to this:

Step 6.  Now the Kar2ouche registration serial numbers need to be placed in a global file containing all the Kar2ouche serial numbers.

To do this, open the Default folder on your server within Kar2oucheContent Modules as shown above, then open the folder named Interface.  Create a new text file and name it serials.txt.  Open the serials.txt file using Notepad or similar text editor, and type in each Kar2ouche serial number in uppercase letters (including the dashes).  Your serials.txt file should look similar to this:

Save then close the text file.

Step 7.  For users to access the Kar2ouche application from the server, a desktop shortcut will need to be placed on each networked workstation.  The desktop shortcut path needs to point to the kar2ouche.exe on the server (this file resides in the Kar2ouche folder).  We recommend renaming this shortcut to Kar2ouche.

NOTE: When the shortcut points to the kar2ouche.exe file the first screen displayed is the Kar2ouche Utilities page which lists the Content Titles and the Open, Load and Save functions.  Simply click on a content title to open.  If you wish Kar2ouche to be open directly to a specific Kar2ouche content title, such as Macbeth for example, then you need to create a desktop shortcut for each content module and add additional information to the desktop shortcut's file target path, as shown here:

...Kar2oucheKar2ouche.exe -module Macbeth

Figure E

You should then rename the desktop shortcut to Kar2ouche Macbeth.

For a list of all other Kar2ouche module extensions please see http://support.immersiveeducation.eu/index.php?ToDo=view&questId=8&catId=116

Step 8.  On one workstation, open the desktop shortcut and make sure Kar2ouche and the content titles are accessible.  If you are unable to access review the notes at the end of this document to resolve common errors.

Step 9. Once installed, Kar2ouche can be configured to suit your network and users.  By default the save and load path will point to the client machine C: drive.  It is advised that this is redirected for network users before providing access to Kar2ouche to all users.  You need only make the amendments once.  Read through the configuration sections in the knowledgebase to find out more http://support.immersiveeducation.eu/index.php?ToDo=view&questId=16&catId=13

NOTE: If the Server Only installation does not run correctly then please check the following:

If any serial number error messages appear please check through the serials.txt file and make sure serial codes are correct and the file name is called Serials.txt.

If the above is correct, copy the global serials.txt file into each Interface directory for each Kar2ouche content title (if you have v3.0 ignore the Composer folder - this contains an embedded CMP- serial number).

For example, if you have the content title Kar2ouche Macbeth, copy the global serials.txt file into ...Kar2ouche > Content Modules > Macbeth > Interface.  Try opening Kar2ouche and each content title again.

Check if you already have a local installation of Kar2ouche on the workstation.  You will have a licence conflict if you have Kar2ouche locally and on the server.   The conflict is caused by the serial numbers stored in the registry file during a local installation.  To resolve, uninstall the local iinstance of Kar2ouche, using add&remove programs.  Alternatively, if you prefer not to remove the local installation simply delete the Kar2ouche registration file on the local machine within H-Key Local Machine/ Software/ImmersiveEducation/

Make sure your folder structure is correct.

Check the folder permissions making sure the Kar2ouche folder has Read and Execute permissions for users.
