What is DirectX? (Windows only)

"Microsoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio." Microsoft Download Center 2005 DirectX is available on Immersive Education CD packs but please check the Microsoft website first for the latest supported versions of DirectX to ensure compatibility with your operating system. Visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/ for more information and free DirectX downloads. The latest available version is DirectX 9.0c and it is compatible with Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP and Windows 2003 Server. To check your current version of DirectX use the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. To run this tool open the Command Prompt and type in dxdiag. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool will display all the information you need to check versions and test DirectX functionality. You can choose to either run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to check functionality first before performing a fresh installation of DirectX, or reinstall DirectX if the DirectX Diagnostic Tool cannot be found or is not working properly.
